Chart 5
Silent Consonants (also referred to as The Goblin Chart)
This chart deals with some words from Old English containing consonants which are no longer sounded.
They may be at the beginning, within or at the end of a word.
The Goblins Chart provides an attractive visual aid to remembering these words.
It's interesting to note that several of these words are still pronounced in full in parts of England - e.g. apostle, sing, lamb.
See The Manual for full details of the proper use of this chart.
